reworking and repairing

I went back in and radically reworked two previous drawings that nagged at me. I regret not scanning them before so you could see a before/after.

and here is also an earlier one I never photographed. I just retouched the distressed style frame (found thrift store item that I painted on) that was maybe a little too distressed.

Dreamscape March 29 (channeling a friend?)

This was a quick one that reminds me of a friend's work. I think I inadvertently channeled her when she posted notices to her new show earlier today. Credit where credit is due :  Kellianne McCarthy is a fellow alum from Moore College of Art and Design. She's showing at Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia by the end of the month.

Dreamscape March 28

One of three dreamscapes I worked on all day yesterday in bed while feeling rather low in energy, not sure if I'm coming down with something. Sleep will help me figure that out. The other two will be uploaded soon. Gouache &  gold ink on watercolor paper.

another tree study

I kept the background unpainted since there is some tone.  I wanted to show the texture of the homemade paper (which I decoupaged onto the canvas.) One foot square. Waterproof ink.

larger tree study

This one is about one foot square. Acrylic ink and gouache on canvas coated with homemade paper.

The Boxing Lesson / Fur State / Three

The Boxing Lesson has just released a new video, "Three".  (I animated One and Four embedded at the upper left hand of this blog. I'll be documenting progress on Eight in the near future. If you haven't seen...get to it! Go on! ...ahem............please...)

Like the two previous animated videos, this video (directed by  Nathan Guy / IndieGuy Productions) has cats aplenty--this time making live appearances on South Congress, Switched On, Good Dannys, The Victory Grill, Side Bar, Joe's Coffee, Rooftops, front porches, etc. Enjoy!

Dreamscape in progress

While I still search for my glasses, I'm working on some dreamscape stuff that I can be up close to. I'm trying to wrap this one up. I started it earlier based on a very early tossed off idea from the M.A. Sheen set of drawings when I was younger. Made more progress on it today & hope this can be finished soon. Again, not the best photography as I work a lot at night. When it is complete I will take a proper photo outdoors in the sunlight.

SXSW

I will have a table of smaller artworks (mostly dreamscapes, some small tree studies, possibly some work from observation) at Gueros (1412 South Congress Avenue Austin, TX 78704)on display this Thursday at around 1:30 to 10 pm. Friday too (  I'll update Friday's start time on twitter .)  I have been working on finishing up some smaller pieces, so the self portraits will be continued likely by the weekend.

I am considering (nothing definite yet) setting up an online shop for my work, (at least for the smaller pieces ). If this may interest you, get in touch. I will compile a early bird list for possible future specials/updates/deals. Email me at artbyjeannehospod@yahoo.com .

I'm not terribly ambitious about attending many shows at the fest this year. Low funds and lack of time are the main reasons. However, I did walk a great deal to meet and shake hands with the legendary Storm Thorgerson celebrating the upcoming documentary of his life and work (which is being screened this week here in town). I do expect to have fun listening to bands at Gueros (The Boxing Lesson one of them of course) while painting or drawing small scale at my table. As far as how my own table of art goes over, well...I'm going to keep low to modest expectations. Perhaps I will be pleasantly surprised.

Due to a breakdown in communication between the individual who invited me to show my work and the owner of the property I could not display my art after all.  I do look forward to better opportunities to share my work in the future.

Self portraits in progress part 3

day 3 for this one. When it is complete I will take a proper focused daylight pic--which I hope is the next session.
Day 2 for this one. I think one more sitting should do it.

When I gave up and turned off one of the lamps, I noticed how the trees & sky were more illuminated & it may spawn a larger painting. (4/10--finished piece here: here )

self portrait in progress part two & resolved previous portrait

I was a little behind getting that sweet spot of time and light at sundown. It is my favorite type light but is fleeting. I need to start a little earlier tomorrow.
I didn't want to pack up my oil paints outside after I barely got into the previous self portrait, so I started another after sundown with the porch light. I hope to finish this in one more sitting. I'll probably let this layer dry before getting back into it.

My ex bf agreed to pose a while back but never did a final sitting where I wanted to punch up the color. I found just heightening the warm colors behind him resolved it satisfactorily enough. It is not quite dry so I couldn't get as clear a photo as I would like (it needs to be either photographed in sunlight or scanned flat on the glass. Since it is still wet it is not quite touching the surface of the scanner.)

I worked on a tree study too but not happy with it enough to post. So we have a lot of this and that going on. I hope I can share something complete soon.

more tree studies (mini format)

I couldn't resist buying a bunch of mini canvases a while back, but I also couldn't find a project that worked with them. However, it seems like the tree studies seem to lend themselves to the size pretty well, I think.
each canvas above is 2"x4".

this is 2"x2"

This is 4"x6".

self portrait in progress part one

I thought I would share with you day to day progress on a self portrait I'm working on out on my porch/balcony. This is oil on canvas. I apologize about the blurriness, but these are rough general areas to start with. It gets more specific as I go on, so you have the general idea for now.

The setup. It's pretty nice out this time of year in Austin & I prefer to deal with fumes outside as much as possible.

Starts with a sienna wash and wipeout of lighter areas with a rag.

Then a rough blocking in of main areas of color.

To be continued tomorrow.

Just for fun: a past collection of rough dootles/ automatic drawings by " M.A. Sheen"

I've been working on wrapping up several paintings & will be uploading them soon. I also have started "Eight" the third and last animation from the album Fur State by The Boxing Lesson.

In the meantime, I thought I would share some very old, very rough, sometimes amusing (well to me anyway) and generally pretty neurotic seeds to a lot of later dreamscape style paintings.

 here's the link:

  M.A. Sheen: rough dootles/automatic drawings from early/mid 20's

The name M.A. Sheen has nothing to do with current Sheens in the media. My best friend used to call me The Machine. I would covertly make these kind of very rough, neurotic but fun doodles/stream of consciousness/ automatic drawings/ scrawlings, whatever you want to call them while pursuing infinitely more refined oil paintings from observation. So back then, I compiled the best of them in a folder with the pseudonym M.A. Sheen.

Earlier today a friend shared a picture of a peculiar fish tongue stealing parasite, which made me think of some of my past pics in the set. They were at the top of my storage chest so I thought I'd archive them, if only for my own amusement. Actually one is the basis of a more refined painting I'm finishing now.
