Visit Home and link to Art Classes

Hello, it's been awhile.

I have been more than a little overwhelmed lately. I've been flying back and forth to Philadelphia to help very ill parents, especially my mom.

Mom and I in 1977/78, I think. I wanted to look just like her when I was a kid. People say they see the resemblance now which pleases me. (She's not much older than me now in this pic). I never grew quite as tall as her to my disappointment, but but her thick coarse hair (one of my favorite things as a little kid was brushing/styling her hair) was a latent unruly genetic gift I received as I had approached my late thirties.

Spent some time in the neighborhood I grew up in. Despite the sadness there is so much beauty there, especially this time of year.

This is the oak tree outside the home I grew up with from birth until I moved away in my mid 20's. My parents bought the home and property when my mom was pregnant with me. It has grown so much, but also seen some significant damage in its age. Lightning did quite a number on it recently, but it still stands tall.

I'm not sure if I'll ever see my old home and neighborhood again. Things are changing and my parents are moving on in more ways than one. I will be visiting again, but not likely at the homestead.

It has been hard to focus on other things, but life goes on and other obligations need to be attended to.

Here in Austin I am teaching painting classes at Marmalade Skies for teens to adults. This is a good class for teens looking to build a portfolio for college admissions and for adults wanting to both loosen up and refine/develop their skills working from observation. Though I do quite a bit of "dreamscape" work,  I strongly recommend a foundation in working on site from direct observation.  It is an important tool for whatever method/medium an artist chooses to express him/herself.

Added Note: classes were slated to start tonight at 6:30 pm but will be postponed one week (September 20th) in order to get more students enrolled. Please check out the link in the previous paragraph and sign up! You will be getting a great bargain--I will be distilling my college studio experience into a generous 2.5 hour class. Enrollment is cheaper if you purchase your own supplies.

Note: although the classes are organized for a 10 week session, I welcome latecomers to hop on and give it a try. I can work with you at wherever you are in the class lesson plans.

Back to work.
